MAMONCILLOS / QUENEPAS
Quenepas, also known as Spanish lime or mamoncillo, is a tropical fruit native to the Caribbean, Central, and South America. They are small, round fruits, about the size of a grape, with a thin, leathery skin that is typically green or yellow.
To eat quenepas, you must first remove the skin by cracking it with your teeth or using a knife to make a small incision. Inside, you will find a juicy, translucent flesh surrounding a small, hard seed. Simply suck on the flesh to enjoy the sweet, tangy flavor. It's important to note that the seed is not meant to be eaten.
Quenepas are typically ripe and ready to eat when they turn from green to yellow or orange and become slightly soft to the touch. They should also give off a sweet aroma. If you buy quenepas that are not yet ripe, you can store them at room temperature for a few days until they ripen.
To store ripe quenepas, you can keep them in the refrigerator for up to a week. If you have a large quantity, you can also freeze them by removing the skin and seed, and then placing them in a freezer-safe container. When you're ready to eat them, simply thaw them at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
